2021 July to December news

Unfortunately, our July to October meetings were all held by video meeting due to the COVID-19 lockdown in Sydney. At least meeting using video gave members the opportunity to talk to each other and find out what the others had been up to during the month. We also held our Stay at Home Trivia by video so interested members could either participate or host the trivia mornings. This was another excellent way to keep in touch, exercise the brain a little during lockdown and have a bit of fun.

November allowed us to return to our meetings at the Church. We had a great turn out at the meeting and members enjoyed a most enlightening talk by Ron from the Australian National Maritime Museum. Ron spoke about the attack on Sydney Harbour by three Japanese midget submarines on the evening of Sunday 31 May 1942. He explained the aim of the mission, the logistics and fate of the submarines and crews as well as highlighting the inadequate defences in Sydney Harbour and circumstances as to why Sydney was so unprepared.

Our evening and afternoon cards resumed in October providing fully vaccinated members with the opportunity to catch up over a light hearted game of Canasta or Count Down Whist.

As the Asquith Golf Club’s monthly trivia wasn’t scheduled to resume until next year, we decided to try out the trivia at Pennant Hills Bowling Club. After a trial by a few members, we had eight members attend the last trivia for the year in December. Surprisingly, our table achieved a third place podium finish. Must have been our knowledge of 70s music and items starting with ‘G’.

Members and their guests enjoyed a Christmas Lunch at Asquith Golf Club in place of our December meeting. It was a fantastic turnout with 51 attending. Asquith Golf Club looked after us and made the afternoon a great way to formally end what has been a rather tough year.

We are planning on resuming our monthly outings in early 2022.
