2019 December and 2020 January news

In place of our December meeting we had our Christmas lunch at Galley Foods Eatery at the Empire Marina, Bobbin Head. Thankfully, when we arrived we were kindly moved indoors to escape the oppressive heat and smoke which filled the valley. All 30 members attending enjoyed the food and the company.

Although faced with storms and heavy rain for our January outing, seven members made their way by train to the city and on arrival decided to find a coffee shop to take refuge until the rain cleared. It wasn’t long before we were on our way again by bus to the Paddington Reservoir Gardens. The Gardens which opened in 2009, is the result of a very thoughtful restoration which seamlessly blends the old 1866 reservoir structure with modern landscaping, boardwalks, stairs and lift. The reservoir ceased operation in 1899 and served as a storage area for the Water Board and as a garage and petrol station until the site was closed in the 1990s when the roof collapsed.

After a very enjoyable lunch at the nearby Paddo RSL, we walked to the Victoria Barracks. After being issued with security passes, our interesting and very knowledgeable guide offered us a brief tour of the grounds. This included the original Barracks buildings, and the historic Busby’s Bore and well. We then went to the Military Museum which is housed in what was once the Military Prison. The Museum includes displays of uniforms, military medals, weaponry and artefacts from colonial days to World War II. Some of the original prison cells can also be viewed.

The enjoyable day ended with a walk cross-country to Moore Park Light Rail Station, a short ride to Central Station and the train home.
