2020 February news

The month started with The Riverboat Postman on the Hawkesbury River. After checking in at the booking office we boarded the ferry and were shown to our table for six. Just before we left the wharf we were served tea and coffee, and ANZAC biscuits. The trip up the river was most enjoyable. The rain was only relatively light on our out bound trip. As we made our way along the Hawkesbury River, the captain provided an enjoyable and very interesting commentary on the sights along the river.

We dropped mail to Dangar Island, Estuary Restaurant at Kangaroo Point, Milson Island, Bar Point and Marlow. Our attention was drawn to a recent landslide near Marlow which totally destroyed a house and damaged neighbouring houses. Thankfully, the house was unoccupied at the time. We then enjoyed an Aussie Ploughman’s-style lunch. On the way back we called in at Milson Passage. Although the rain became increasingly heavier on our return trip, we still enjoyed the outing.

The guest speaker at our February meeting was Wendy from the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Her talk covered the history of the RFDS from its formation to the current day, and outlined the work done by the RFDS today. The importance of their work was reinforced by one of our members who had witnessed the amazing work of the RFDS on a remote station.

Our second outing for the month was our club’s 22nd outing and involved 11 members attending the ‘Step Into Paradise’ exhibition at the Powerhouse Museum. The exhibition far exceeded our expectations, even for those who were initially a little reluctant to attend. The Curator of the exhibition was our guide and she was extremely informative, bringing the vibrant displays to life. After lunch most of us returned to the Museum to view the general exhibitions. We regrouped about 3:00pm for the easy walk back to Central Station for the train trip home.
